Tips For Serious Players

If you have played other trump games like Spades, Bid Whist, or Bridge, you will experience a world of difference. in those 3 games, you would contract to turn a set number of Tricks, ranging from 1 to 13, since only 52 cards are involved. In Double Deck Pinochle, with 80 cards, divided by 4, you contract to turn, not Tr[cks, but Points, since any Trick can contain from 1 to 6 points, totaling 50 Trick points. These Trick Points combined with Meld points can add up to 300 or more points that either side can contract to fulfill. 

      In addition, further limitations are placed. A player is not permitted to throw a losing card on partner's winning trick, but if able, must override the already won trick.  Also, players are required to override any card previously played when the trick reaches him. 

     In short, a player used to playing Spades, Whist, or Bridge may prove to be at a disadvantage when learning Double Deck Pinochle.

An integral part of strategy in Pinochle, which is often overlooked is Timing. The reason timing is so crucial? In other trump games like Euchre, Spades,  Whist and Bridge, you are only required to contract for a small number of Tricks trom 1 to 13. In Double Deck Pinochle there are 20 Tricks, any one of which may contain from 0 to 4 Points. However the last thick may be as high as Six points, so the serious player always strives to gain this last trick that may make the difference between making or missing the bid. Ergo, timing your play to ensure that last trick can prove to be very important.
